R.I. District 345 – Rotary in Taiwan

The Rotary Club of Taipei, established before 1949, continued mainland China’s Rotary legacy after the Chinese Communist victory. It was Taiwan’s first Rotary Club and the only one until 1953 when clubs in Keelung and Tainan were founded. Rotary’s presence in Taiwan has grown to 43 clubs with nearly 1,800 members, forming most of District 345, which also includes Hong Kong and Macao. Taiwanese Rotarians have supported community improvements such as street lighting, rehabilitation equipment, libraries, and sports facilities for disabled children. They are also strong supporters of Little League baseball, celebrating Taiwan’s multiple World Series wins. District 345 donated $77,690 to The Rotary Foundation in 1972-73, with Taiwan contributing $45,380. Taiwan ranks fifth globally in Paul Harris Fellows, demonstrating commitment to international understanding through cultural exchanges, disaster relief, and youth programs. President Chiang Kai-shek lauded Rotary’s role in promoting service and global harmony.
