Peking–Peiping–Peking – A Rotary Club under 3 different National Flags

The Peking Rotary Club, founded in 1924, was the third Rotary Club in China and the first in the national capital, then called Peiping. Its 22 founding members included about one-third native Chinese alongside European and American professionals during a time of warlord rule. The city’s name changed multiple times—Peiping before 1403, Peking in the Ming era, reverted to Peiping in 1928 under the Republic of China, shifted back to Peking during Japanese occupation in 1937, then returned post-World War II, before becoming Beijing after 1958 under the People’s Republic of China. The club operated under three different national flags—Republic of China, Japanese occupation, and Communist China—mirroring these political shifts. Early international ties included communication with Rotary leaders in Massachusetts as early as 1920, highlighting the club’s role bridging local and international communities.
