Ricardo Lin (林華新, 1921–2010) was a Taiwanese entrepreneur, philanthropist, and calligrapher known for his pivotal role in Taiwan’s furniture export industry and his influential service in Rotary International. After surviving political imprisonment during Taiwan’s White Terror era, Lin co-founded Chiao Ta Wood Industry, growing it into a major furniture exporter. He served as charter secretary (1964-65) and president (1969-70) of the Rotary Club of Taipei East (台北東區扶輪社), and was elected District Governor of Rotary International District 345 (covering northern Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau) in 1984-85. Known as the “Rotary Old Mischief,” he softened rigid Rotary meetings with humor and multilingual skills in Mandarin, Cantonese, and English. His family also contributed significantly to Rotary: his daughter Nellie Lin founded Taipei Ricardo Rotary Club in 2011 and served as District Governor. Lin’s autobiography, published in 2008, recounts his remarkable journey from political prisoner to respected civic leader and Rotary pillar in Taiwan and the region.
