T.C. Lai (1921–2022) was a distinguished Hong Kong scholar, translator, calligrapher, and painter, known for serving as the 14th President of the Rotary Club of Hong Kong Island West (1967–1968). Son of Lai Jixi, a Qing dynasty Hanlin scholar and co-founder of the University of Hong Kong’s School of Chinese Studies, Lai upheld his heritage by promoting Chinese culture globally. He studied English at the University of Hong Kong and worked at the Republic of China embassy in London (1944–1948). He later taught in Hong Kong and led the Department of Extra-Mural Studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (1965–1984). As a founding member of the Hong Kong Translation Society, he advanced translation education and Chinese language advocacy. Lai authored over 40 English works introducing Chinese culture, blended Chinese and Western art styles in calligraphy and painting, managed the Xuehai Book House, and was appointed Justice of the Peace in 1970. He died at age 101 in 2022.
