Sir Horace Kadoorie (1902–1995), a British-born Hong Kong industrialist of Sephardi Jewish descent, significantly expanded the Kadoorie family businesses and advanced humanitarian efforts in Asia. Educated in England and Shanghai, he managed family enterprises in Shanghai in the 1920s and 1930s and founded the Shanghai Jewish Youth Association in 1937 to aid Jewish refugees from Nazi persecution. Interned by Japanese forces during World War II, he later co-led the postwar reconstruction of family businesses including China Light & Power and Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels Ltd., managing landmarks such as the Peninsula Hotel. In 1951, he co-founded the Kadoorie Agricultural Aid Association to support impoverished rural communities in Hong Kong’s New Territories by promoting modern farming and infrastructure development. Honored with the Ramon Magsaysay Award and a knighthood, Sir Horace’s philanthropic legacy continues through institutions that promote education, agriculture, and welfare in Hong Kong and beyond.
