Dr. Joseph Lexden Shellshear (Hong Kong)

Dr. Joseph Lexden Shellshear (1885–1958) was an Australian army officer, medical scientist, and anatomist who significantly contributed to medicine and anthropology. After graduating from the University of Sydney in 1907, he served as a Major in the Australian Imperial Force during World War I and earned the Distinguished Service Order. Between 1923 and 1936, Shellshear chaired the Anatomy Department at the University of Hong Kong, where he researched human brain anatomy and prehistoric cultures and served twice as Dean of Medicine. He later returned to Sydney as a research professor in anatomy and practicing radiologist. Shellshear’s pioneering studies compared brain anatomy across ethnic groups to promote racial understanding. The University of Sydney honors him with the J. L. Shellshear Museum of Comparative Anatomy and Physical Anthropology, which preserves his important collections.
