The First Ever Delegation from China to the Rotary Annual Convention in 1920

In June 1920, the Shanghai Rotary Club, established only eight months prior and mainly composed of Americans, made history by sending the first delegation from China to the 11th Annual International Rotary Convention in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The four delegates, including George L. Treadwell and J. E. Doyle, traveled over 12,000 miles with the Republic of China flag. The convention featured worship services, parades, receptions, and educational exhibits, highlighting Rotary’s international influence. Treadwell described the Shanghai Rotary as a “Rotary League of Nations,” promoting international cooperation within the multinational Shanghai International Settlement. He emphasized the objective of spreading Rotary principles and encouraging native Chinese Rotary clubs. The convention drew 7,213 attendees from 664 clubs worldwide, marking a key milestone in Rotary’s global growth and service mission.
