Henry Ching, OBE, JP (1891–1968), was a groundbreaking journalist and editor of the South China Morning Post (SCMP) in Hong Kong. Born in Brisbane to a Chinese father from Sha Tau Kok and a British mother, he moved to Hong Kong in 1915 and joined SCMP in 1916 as its first non-European reporter. He became editor in 1924, leading the paper for 33 years. A Rotarian from the early 1930s, Ching was appointed Justice of the Peace in 1937. During the Japanese occupation (1941–1945), SCMP stopped publishing and Ching faced arrest. After the war, he resumed editing and reported on Hong Kong’s liberation. His enduring influence shaped SCMP’s reputation for journalistic integrity. His family also held important roles in Hong Kong’s colonial administration.
