Wilfred Victor Pennell (1892–1977), an English journalist and Rotary leader, was influential in both Tientsin (天津) and Hong Kong. He joined the Rotary Club of Tientsin in 1925 while serving as Associate Editor of the Peking and Tientsin Times and was club president from 1931 to 1932. In the early 1950s, after moving to Hong Kong and working for the South China Morning Post, he became President of the Hong Kong Rotary Club (1954–1955). Pennell was recognized for his refugee relief advocacy during this time. Born in Yeovil, England, he began journalism at sixteen, moved to China in 1916, and was interned during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong in World War II. Afterwards, he worked for the BBC in India. In 1964, he was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire for his public service in Hong Kong. His writings, including the 1974 semi-autobiography A Lifetime with the Chinese, are valuable historical resources.
