Tong Yuen-Chan (唐元湛, 1861–1921) was the first Chinese active member of Rotary International, joining the Shanghai Rotary Club in 1919 where he served as treasurer. Born in Guangdong, he studied in the United States before returning to China to pioneer its telegraph system, holding top positions from operator to director-general through the Qing and early Republic eras. He was a key figure in modernization, witnessing the 1911 Xinhai Revolution and serving as the Republic’s first Telegraph Bureau director. Tong later became a banker and devoted himself to social causes, founding schools, promoting education, the Red Cross, and the Boy Scouts in China. Known as the “Father of Students,” he ardently supported Chinese students studying abroad. His wife, Deng Feng (鄧鳳), was a prominent female social activist involved in women’s anti-footbinding and revolutionary support. Tong died in 1921, honored by thousands at his public funeral, remembered for bridging Chinese and Western cultures and his lifelong public service.
