ENG

Dr. Ching-Sung Yu (余青松, 1897–1978) was a prominent Chinese-American astrophysicist and a founding member of the Nanking Rotary Club (南京扶輪社) established in 1934. Educated in the United States, he earned a B.Sc. in Civil Architecture from Lehigh University, an M.Sc. in Astronomy from the University of Pittsburgh, and a Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of California. Dr. Yu founded the Purple Mountain Observatory (南京紫金山天文臺) in Nanjing in 1934, serving as its first director, and also established the Phoenix Mountain Observatory in Kunming (昆明). His early 1920s stellar spectrophotometry research at Lick Observatory was internationally influential. Forced to relocate observatories during the Sino-Japanese War, Yu emigrated to North America in 1947, working at the University of Toronto, Harvard College Observatory, and later directing the Williams Observatory at Hood College in Maryland until retiring in 1967. In 1987, asteroid 3797 was named “Ching-Sung Yu” in his honor by Harvard’s Oak Ridge Observatory. He died in Frederick, Maryland, and is buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
