Asteroid 3797 was named after Dr. Ching-Sung Yu (1897–1978), a Chinese-American astrophysicist and charter member of the Nanking Rotary Club (1934). Born in Xiamen, Fujian Province, Yu earned degrees in civil architecture and astronomy from Lehigh University, University of Pittsburgh, and the University of California, Santa Cruz. He conducted pioneering spectrophotometric studies of 91 stars at Lick Observatory in the 1920s. Returning to China in 1927, he founded the Purple Mountain Observatory (南京紫金山天文臺) in Nanking and served as its first director. Yu also helped establish the Yunnan Observatory and held leadership roles with Academia Sinica and the Chinese Astronomical Society. After World War II, he moved to North America, teaching at the University of Toronto and directing the Williams Observatory at Hood College until retirement. Discovered in 1987 by Oak Ridge Observatory, asteroid 3797 orbits within the main asteroid belt, honoring Yu’s contributions to astronomy and Rotary history.
