Yen Chia-Kan (嚴家淦, 1905–1993), known as C.K. Yen, was Vice President and later President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) from 1975 to 1978 following Chiang Kai-Shek’s death. Born in Wu County, Jiangsu, he graduated from Saint John’s University, Shanghai, in 1926. Yen managed the Shanghai Railway and directed Fujian’s Finance Department, introducing agricultural tax policies during wartime. After 1947, he held key financial posts in Taiwan, including Finance Commissioner, Minister of Economic Affairs, and Minister of Finance. In 1948, Yen co-founded the Taipei Rotary Club and served as its first president, marking Rotary’s reestablishment in Taiwan after relocating from Mainland China. He also governed Taiwan Province and played a pivotal role in economic policy and managing U.S. aid during Taiwan’s postwar recovery and development.
