In 1968, during a period of social and political change in the United States, students at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) founded the first official Rotaract club, a Rotary International-affiliated service organization for young adults aged 18 to 30. Leaders like Bill Baumgardner, Dick Helms, and John Lafferty helped establish the club, which quickly gained Rotary sponsorship and grew in prominence. Rotaract now includes over 186,000 members in more than 8,100 clubs worldwide across nearly 140 countries. The founders emphasized Rotaract’s importance in fostering leadership and community service skills. The UNCC club inspired similar early clubs, including one in Mexico. To honor its beginnings, Rotary International launched World Rotaract Week in 1992, celebrated annually each March, with strong institutional support from figures such as UNCC Chancellor Dean Colvard.
