The World in 1945 when Rotary 40 Years Old

In 1945, Rotary International marked its 40th anniversary with worldwide celebrations including broadcasts and greetings from 31 heads of government. Despite ongoing World War II conflicts, Rotary leaders like Paul Harris and Richard Wells participated in notable international broadcasts. Rotary’s Relief Fund provided emergency aid to members and families affected by Allied bombings in regions such as Singapore, the Philippines, Europe, and Switzerland. The war caused many Rotary clubs to suspend activities or lose membership. China, which joined Rotary in 1919 as the 14th country, had 28 clubs in 1945; however, 19 were inactive due to Japanese occupation. Nine clubs remained active in free areas under Dr. Chengting T. Wang’s leadership. Additionally, Manchuria and Formosa (Taiwan) were represented, while Hong Kong maintained one club during this period.
