The Rotary Club of Shanghai as in 1950

Contrary to common belief, the Rotary Club of Shanghai remained active through 1950 after the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. Weekly meetings were held at the Sino-British Cultural Association, and the club continued publishing its newsletter, The Pagoda. On June 29, 1950, a significant handover meeting took place with 33 members and visiting Rotarians, officially transferring the Trachoma Mobile Clinic to St. Luke’s Hospital. Although membership declined to 58 due to economic difficulties and emigration, the club stayed engaged. Dr. F. S. Tsang, an esteemed ophthalmologist and academic, was installed as president for 1950–1951. He championed ongoing service and fellowship, underscoring Rotary’s worldwide mission and encouraging unity and optimism amid Shanghai’s political and social upheaval. Em 29 de junho de 1950, houve uma reunião de transferência importante com 33 membros e rotarianos visitantes, oficializando a transferência da Clínica Móvel de Tracoma para o Hospital St. Luke’s.
