The Evolution of the ‘Object of Rotary’

The “Object of Rotary” has evolved since Rotary’s founding in 1905 by Paul P. Harris and three friends in Chicago. The original 1906 Constitution listed three aims focused on business promotion, fellowship, and community interests. As Rotary grew, concerns over its commercial focus led to a shift toward service and ethics. By 1910, the National Association of Rotary Clubs outlined five objects highlighting civic pride and business ethics. The 1921 Edinburgh Convention added a sixth object promoting international understanding and peace. Renamed Rotary International in 1922, the organization simplified its objects to four by 1951, emphasizing service in personal, professional, and community life and fostering global goodwill. Since 1990, the wording has become gender-inclusive, reflecting Rotary’s ongoing dedication to unity and service worldwide.
