Rotary in China as in the Year 1924

The Shanghai Rotary Club was founded on October 1, 1919, sponsored by the Seattle Rotary Club, marking China as the ninth country to join Rotary International. By 1924, the Tientsin Rotary Club (1923) and the Peking Rotary Club (1924) had been established, expanding Rotary’s presence in China. Admiral Tsai Ting-Kan was the first Chinese president of a Rotary club. At that time, China had three Rotary clubs operating without a district system, supervised by an Honorary Commissioner appointed by Rotary International. Rotary promoted ethical standards, service above self, and fellowship among business and professional men, with strict attendance and classification rules. In 1924, Rotary International encompassed 1,592 clubs and 97,000 members across 26 countries. China’s then territory included Mongolia as a protectorate until 1928. Chinese-language Rotary publications began in Shanghai in 1923, initiated by Dr. Fong Foo-Sec and Dr. Chengting Thomas Wang to support the spread of Rotary ideals in China.

O Rotary Club de Xangai foi fundado em 1º de outubro de 1919, patrocinado pelo Rotary Club de Seattle, tornando a China o nono país a ingressar no Rotary International. Até 1924, foram estabelecidos o Rotary Club de Tientsin (1923) e o Rotary Club de Pequim (1924), ampliando a presença do Rotary na China. O almirante Tsai Ting-Kan foi o primeiro presidente chinês de um clube Rotary.
