The Soochow Rotary Club (吳縣扶輪社) was founded in 1936 inside the walled city of Wu Xian, under Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, Republic of China. Sponsored by the Shanghai Rotary Club, it joined Rotary International on November 11, 1936, as Charter Number 4053, becoming the 21st club in District 81. Formation efforts began in 1935, led by Ernest F. Harris from Shanghai, with help from Hangzhou, Nanjing, and Shanghai clubs. Key local figures included Dr. Yang Yung-Ching, president of Soochow University, and Revd. Francis A. Cox. The charter ceremony was held on January 16, 1937, welcoming over 100 guests from China and abroad. Meetings were held weekly at No. 16, Si Mei Hong, Soochow. The club focused on community service, assisting prisoners and supporting rickshaw pullers, marking an important expansion of Rotary activities in pre-war China.
