The First 30 Years of Women in Rotary

In July 2019, Rotary celebrated its 100th anniversary in Shanghai and Greater China, spotlighting women’s increasing participation. Md. Terri Lau from Hong Kong became the third female president of the Shanghai Rotary Club for 2019-2020. Since its 1905 founding, Rotary International clubs were all-male until a 1987 U.S. Supreme Court decision prompted R.I. to allow women’s membership in American clubs. By 1989, Rotary globally permitted local clubs to admit women. While some clubs chose to remain all-male, women gradually gained acceptance, contributing actively to club projects and leadership. Early proposals to include women appeared in 1950, 1964, 1972, and 1977, reflecting the broader progress of women in professional fields. Today, women Rotarians embody Rotary’s enduring motto “Service Above Self,” working alongside men in community service worldwide.

2019年7月，扶轮社在上海及大中华区庆祝成立一百周年，强调女性参与度的显著提升。来自香港的劳敏怡女士成为2019-2020年度上海扶轮社第三位女性社长。自1905年扶轮国际成立以来，俱乐部一直仅限男性会员，直到1987年美国最高法院裁决允许女性加入美国扶轮俱乐部，促使扶轮国际改变政策。至1989年，扶轮国际允许各地俱乐部自行决定是否接纳女性会员。尽管部分俱乐部选择继续只招男性，女性会员渐获认可并积极参与俱乐部各项事务与领导工作。早在1950、1964、1972及1977年已有提案推动女性入会，反映女性在职业领域的不断进步。如今，女性扶轮社友与男性同仁共同秉持“服务超越自我”的宗旨，投身全球社区服务。
