Mao Teng-Siao (Taipei) 毛v霄(_北)

ENG
Mao Teng-Siao (毛騰霄) co-founded Standard Shirts Dyeing, Weaving & Finishing Mills in Shanghai in 1933, which launched the well-known “SMART Shirt” brand in 1942 during the Sino-Japanese War. The brand gained rapid popularity in mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia by the late 1940s and early 1950s. Standard Shirts became the largest shirt manufacturer in the Far East by 1948, employing thousands in Shanghai and operating multiple overseas branches. Following the Communist takeover of Shanghai in 1949, Mao moved part of the business to Taipei and later joined the Rotary Club of Taipei. The company expanded further in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Japan through the 1950s. It is important to distinguish Mao’s Standard Shirts from a separate Hong Kong firm, Smart Shirts Manufacturers Ltd, established in 1956. Mao’s story illustrates the resilience and international growth of a Chinese textile brand during a turbulent historical period.
