The Swatow Rotary Club (汕頭扶輪社), founded in 1936 as the second Rotary Club in the Kwangtung (Guangdong) Province, was a significant institution in a key trading port opened to foreigners in 1860. Swatow, a coastal city distinct in language and culture from Cantonese, developed rapidly into a commercial and industrial hub by the early 20th century. The club, sponsored mainly by the Foochow Rotary Club and led by Dr. Peter Pan, joined Rotary International as Charter No. 3973. Despite thriving operations and community service efforts, the club faced severe disruptions during the Japanese occupation from 1939 to 1945 and ceased activity amid wartime difficulties. Post-World War II, the club was briefly revived in 1947, but political upheaval after the Communist takeover in 1949 led to its final termination in 1950. The Swatow Rotary Club reflects the complex history of international commerce, war, and political change in southern China.
