The Canton Rotary Club (廣州扶輪社) was established in late 1931 in Guangzhou (formerly called Canton), Republic of China, becoming the fourth Rotary club in the country. The club was officially admitted to Rotary International in April 1932, receiving Charter #3509. Key figures in its founding included Dr. Chien Shu-Fan (president), James McClure Henry (vice-president), and George Ashmore Fitch, who represented the Shanghai Rotary Club in organizing efforts. The club held its first official meeting on December 15, 1931, at Hotel Asia in Canton, with 30 charter members and visiting Rotarians from Hong Kong and Shanghai. Canton at the time was a thriving commercial city, strategically located on the Pearl River, with strong transport links to Hong Kong and Macau. The club regularly met at Hotel Asia or aboard a steamboat on the Hong Kong-Canton route, fostering close ties with the Hong Kong Rotary Club. Unfortunately, political changes led to its termination in 1950. Despite this, Cantonese Rotary clubs thrive today, mainly in the United States.
