Sun Rui-Huang (Shanghai West) 孫瑞璜(滬西)

Sun Rui-Huang (1900–1980) from Chongming Island near Shanghai was a prominent banker and patriot. Educated at Tsing Hua College, New York University, and Columbia University, he returned to China in 1927 and became deputy general manager of Sin Hua Trust & Savings Bank in 1930, working with Wang Zhi-xin to revitalize the institution. During the Japanese invasion and Second Sino-Japanese War, Sun actively participated in resistance efforts and fundraising for military and humanitarian causes. He contributed to socialist literature by supporting the Chinese editions of Edgar Snow’s “Red Star Over China” and the complete works of Lu Xun. After 1949, Sun held key financial and public roles in the new People’s Republic, aiding the integration of Sin Hua Bank into the state system. Despite persecution during the Cultural Revolution, he remained devoted to socialist principles until his death in 1980.
