Shenyang City – the unique home of 3 Rotary Clubs under 3 Different Regimes

Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning Province, uniquely hosted three Rotary Clubs under three different regimes. The Mukden Rotary Club was chartered on April 11, 1929, during Japan’s puppet state Manchukuo and dissolved in 1940. The Mukden/Shen-Yang Rotary Club then operated under the Republic of China from March 31, 1948, until its closure in 1950. The current Shenyang Rotary Club was admitted to Rotary International on October 20, 2017, and remains active under the People’s Republic of China. Shenyang, formerly Mukden, was the Manchu capital before the Qing Dynasty relocated to Beijing. The city was a strategic military and industrial center, central to the Russo-Japanese War and Japanese occupation after the 1931 Mukden Incident. Its industrial development continued under Japanese rule and later political shifts during the Chinese Civil War, ending with Communist control after 1948.
