The Hon. Arnaldo de Oliveira Sales (Hong Kong)

The Honourable Arnaldo de Oliveira Sales (沙利士) was a distinguished Hong Kong public figure and Rotary Club leader. Joining the Rotary Club of Hong Kong in 1956 after serving as the World President of Junior Chamber International, he became Club President in 1965–1966. Sales was a key sports administrator, chairing the Hong Kong Olympic Academy and co-founding the Amateur Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong. Appointed to the Urban Council in 1957, he became its first elected civilian chairman from 1973 to 1981, overseeing the expansion of public recreational amenities. The Urban Council managed municipal services on Hong Kong Island and Kowloon until its dissolution in 1999 after Hong Kong’s sovereignty transfer. Sales also contributed to the Hong Kong Basic Law Consultative Committee between 1985 and 1990, playing a major role in the territory’s administrative and cultural development during a transformative era.

Ingressou no Rotary Club de Hong Kong em 1956, após atuar como Presidente Mundial da Junior Chamber International, tornando-se Presidente do clube em 1965–1966. Sales foi um importante administrador esportivo, presidindo a Academia Olímpica de Hong Kong e cofundando a Federação de Esportes Amadores e o Comitê Olímpico de Hong Kong. Nomeado para o Urban Council em 1957, foi seu primeiro presidente civil eleito de 1973 a 1981, supervisionando a expansão de instalações recreativas públicas. O Urban Council geria serviços municipais na Ilha de Hong Kong e Kowloon até sua dissolução em 1999 após a transferência de soberania. Sales também integrou o Comitê Consultivo da Lei Básica de Hong Kong de 1985 a 1990, exercendo papel importante no desenvolvimento administrativo e cultural do território em um período transformador.
