Rotary-in-China-2001-扶輪在中國-2001.pdf

This article by Christopher Bo Bramsen, former Royal Danish Ambassador to China and member of the Rotary Club of Copenhagen, was the keynote speech at the 70th Anniversary of the Rotary Club of Hong Kong in 2001. It outlines the history of Rotary in China, starting with the first club in Shanghai in 1919. Subsequent clubs were established in Tientsin and Peking (Beijing), with the Peking club officially chartered in 1924, including prominent members like Admiral Tsai Ting-Kan and Dr. C.T. Wang. By World War II, there were 11 clubs across China and Hong Kong. Activities ceased during the Japanese occupation from 1941 but resumed in 1945. After the formation of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, mainland clubs closed by 1951, while those in Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan continued growing. From 1978, foreign Rotary clubs gradually returned, culminating in 1996 with an expatriate Rotary group in Beijing affiliated with the Rotary Club of Hong Kong, marking Rotary’s reestablishment on the mainland.
