Rotary in Asia – January 1959

The Rotary movement in Asia covers a vast region from the Straits of the Dardanelles to Tokyo Bay. Since Asia’s first Rotary Club was founded in Manila, Philippines, in 1919, the organization grew to 55 clubs with 2,800 members across 14 countries by 1933, and further expanded to 150 clubs and 6,100 members in 18 countries by 1939. After World War II, membership declined to 75 clubs and 3,400 members in eight countries. This 1959 edition highlights contributions from key Rotary figures such as George Ernest Marden of Hong Kong, former President of the Shanghai Rotary Club and Rotary International Director, along with R.C. Chen of the Taipei Rotary Club, Taiwan, who discuss their visions for Rotary’s continued development in Asia.
