In February 1935, Rotary International founder Paul P. Harris and his wife visited the Rotary clubs of Shanghai and Hong Kong to celebrate Rotary’s 30th anniversary. Accompanied by Rotary International President Robert L. “Bob” Hill and his wife, they traveled from San Francisco to Manila to attend the 5th Pacific Regional Conference. The voyage on the ocean liner President Coolidge included stops in Honolulu, Yokohama, Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, 上海, and Hong Kong. George A. Fitch, former president of the Shanghai Rotary Club, joined the group to share insights on Rotary’s activities in China. Despite a challenging 17-day sea crossing, the delegation was warmly welcomed at each port, including by the Honolulu Rotary Club, highlighting Rotary’s commitment to fostering friendship and cooperation across national and religious lines.
