Professor Cades Alfred Middleton-Smith (1879–1951) was the first Dean of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), serving from 1912 to 1939. Born in Portsmouth, England, he was educated at Portsmouth Grammar School and the Royal Naval Engineering College. Before joining HKU, he taught engineering in Birmingham and London. At HKU, he established the Faculty of Engineering and introduced honours classifications. In 1918, he secured professional recognition of HKU’s engineering degree from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) after initial rejections. Middleton-Smith was President of the Hong Kong Institute of Engineers & Shipbuilders and served in the Hong Kong Defence Force during World War I. Upon retiring in 1939, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws by HKU. He died in Guernsey in 1951 and is remembered as the father of engineering education in Hong Kong, though few today know of his contributions.
