Maurice Frederick Key (紀連), OBE (1886-1969), served as Secretary of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce (1924-1947) and was an active member and Club Secretary (1931-1932) of the Hong Kong Rotary Club (香港扶輪社). Awarded the OBE in 1939, Key is renowned for his experience as a civilian internee at Stanley Internment Camp (赤柱拘留營) during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong (1942-1945) in World War II. Following the fall of Hong Kong on Christmas Day 1941, Key endured severe hardships along with approximately 2,800 Allied civilians held captive under harsh conditions, including malnutrition and overcrowding. He documented these experiences in a booklet published in 1945, later reprinted in Hong Kong. Key’s account offers valuable insight into life in the Stanley camp, the brutal occupation, and the eventual liberation of Hong Kong in 1945. His narrative also reflects on Hong Kong’s socio-economic conditions before and during the war, underscoring the resilience of both internees and the local business community.
