David Kwok – (Shanghai) From Industrialist to Statesman

David Kwok (郭棣活), a leading Shanghai textile industrialist, was a central figure in the Shanghai Rotary Club from 1930 until 1951. As sub-manager of Wing On Textile Manufacturing Co., he helped the Club survive Japanese occupation during World War II and the postwar period. After the Club closed due to geopolitical tensions in 1951, Kwok preserved its archives until their 1965 transfer to the Shanghai Municipal Archives. In 1958, he became Deputy Governor of Guangdong Province under the People’s Republic of China. The Kwok family sustained a strong Rotary legacy across China, Hong Kong, and the U.S., with members in leadership roles from the 1920s to the 2010s. This multigenerational involvement underscores their significant role in Shanghai’s Rotary history and regional governance amid profound political and social changes.
