Norman Hinsdale Pitman (Tientsin)

Norman Hinsdale Pitman (1876–1925) was an American educator and author who played a key role in bringing Chinese folklore to Western audiences. After earning his M.A. from the University of Tennessee in 1897, he moved to China around 1900, teaching at Chihli Province College (1909–1912) and Pei-Yang University in Tientsin. Pitman joined the Rotary Club of Tientsin in 1923, shortly before his death in 1925, and was buried in China. His major work, The Chinese Fairy Book (1919), along with earlier collections such as Chinese Fairy Stories (1910) and A Chinese Wonder Book (1919), compiled traditional Chinese myths and legends, helping to preserve and promote Chinese folklore internationally. Pitman’s writings significantly enhanced cross-cultural understanding between East and West during the early 20th century.
