George A. Fitch – Aid Mainland Refugee Chinese Intellectuals to Taiwan

After the 1949 founding of the People’s Republic of China, the U.S. launched the Aid Refugee Chinese Intellectuals (ARCI) program in 1952 to help Chinese intellectuals escaping communist rule. George Ashmore Fitch (1883–1979), an American missionary and prominent Rotarian, served as ARCI’s Far East Representative in Taiwan from 1952 to 1963. He coordinated housing, employment, and resettlement efforts, including creating “Juddville,” a refugee village near Taipei. Fitch assisted over 13,500 refugees in Taiwan and thousands more in Southeast Asia and the U.S. His memoirs reveal his diplomatic and humanitarian work and close collaboration with Chiang Kai-Shek’s government. Taiwanese leaders, including Prime Minister Ho Ying-Chin, praised Fitch for his lifetime dedication and friendship to the Chinese people during the Cold War era.

George Ashmore Fitch (1883–1979), missionário americano e destacado rotariano, atuou como representante do ARCI no Extremo Oriente em Taiwan de 1952 a 1963. Ele coordenou esforços de habitação, emprego e reassentamento, incluindo a criação de “Juddville”, uma vila de refugiados perto de Taipei. Fitch auxiliou mais de 13.500 refugiados em Taiwan e milhares em Sudeste Asiático e EUA. Suas memórias revelam seu trabalho diplomático e humanitário, bem como sua estreita colaboração com o governo de Chiang Kai-Shek.
