This historical overview explores the legacy of “Formosa” (Taiwan), a name given by Portuguese sailors in 1542 and used in the West until the 20th century. It highlights key figures in Taiwan’s Rotary Clubs and Christian missionary work after World War II. Rev. James Ira Dickson (1900–1967), a Canadian Presbyterian missionary and principal of the Taiwan Theological College, co-founded and presided over the Taipei Rotary Club (1948–1950). Expelled during Japanese rule, he returned post-WWII to lead theological education, church reform, and indigenous missions, founding the Taiwan Evangelical Fellowship in 1950. Other leaders include R. C. Chen (1896–1983), former Taipei Rotary president and ROC Central Bank Vice-President, and Yeh Ting-Kuai, charter president of the Tainan Rotary Club (1953–1954) and Tainan’s first elected mayor. These figures significantly shaped Taiwan’s religious, social, and civic life during political shifts from Japanese colonial rule to Republic of China governance.
