Dwight Woodbridge Edwards (1883–1967) was a prominent figure in East Asia as senior secretary of the International Committee of the YMCA in China and president of the Rotary Club of Peiping (Beijing) from 1935 to 1936. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, he graduated from Princeton University before moving to Japan in 1906. Edwards spent 43 years in East Asia, also serving as field director of United China Relief, a key American humanitarian group aiding civilians during the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II. He married Mary Estelle Vanderslice in Beijing in 1915; she was interned by Japanese forces during WWII and freed in 1943. Returning to the U.S. in 1949, Edwards received honors including the Decoration of the Bountiful Harvest from the Chinese government and an honorary doctorate from Princeton. He died in Princeton, New Jersey, leaving behind his wife, daughter, brother, and eight grandchildren.
