George Ashmore Fitch (1883–1979), an American Presbyterian missionary born in Soochow, China, headed the YMCA National Committee in Nanking during the 1937–38 massacre by the Japanese Imperial Army. After Japan’s invasion in July 1937 and Nanking’s fall in December, Fitch helped manage the International Committee for the Nanking Safety Zone, sheltering civilians from atrocities. He risked his life to smuggle secret film footage by priest John Magee, photographs, testimonies, diaries, and letters documenting the mass murder, rape, and destruction by Japanese forces. These materials, concealed in his coat, informed the international community and later served as crucial evidence at the 1946 International Military Tribunal for the Far East. Fitch’s diaries offer a rare firsthand account of the horrors and resilience witnessed during one of the 20th century’s worst wartime atrocities. He continued humanitarian work in China and East Asia until retirement.
