Early History of The Rotary Foundation before 1950

The Rotary Foundation was established in 1917 following a 1916 proposal by Rotary Clubs International President Arch C. Klumph to create a charitable endowment. Initial funding started modestly with a $26.50 donation from the Rotary Club of Kansas City, growing to nearly $4,000 by the mid-1920s after merging with an existing relief fund. At the 1928 Minneapolis Convention, the Foundation was formally integrated into Rotary International’s bylaws, with Klumph as its first Chairman of Trustees. Early fundraising was led by Klumph, though trustees were not solely responsible for funds. The Foundation’s mission has been to promote world understanding, goodwill, and peace through health, education, and poverty relief. By 2016, it had invested over $4 billion in global projects including polio eradication, clean water, disease prevention, and economic development.
