The first Rotary sponsorship of a Chinese Student to Belgium

In 1983, Rotary sponsored its first Chinese student to study abroad, marking a meaningful renewal of its engagement with China. The initiative started in December 1980, when Gilbert, Regional Director for ACEC in China, met Robert Yen and his father Louis J. Yen, the last president of the Rotary Club of Tianjin before its 1952 closure. Louis Yen, a Cornell graduate and Freemason, sought support from the Rotary Club of Nivelles for his granddaughter Annabel Tze-Shuang Yen to study in Belgium. On September 30, 1982, Nivelles officially invited Annabel for a year-long study, with District 217 covering travel expenses and Rotary families hosting her. Annabel arrived in Belgium on August 17, 1983, exemplifying Rotary’s commitment to fostering international peace and understanding through educational exchange.
