Chinese Rotarian The First Man Signed The United Nations Charter 1945

In 1945, Dr. V. K. Wellington Koo, a prominent Chinese diplomat and honorary member of the Shanghai Rotary Club, became the first individual to sign the United Nations Charter. Signed on June 26, 1945, in San Francisco by representatives of 50 founding countries, the Charter established the United Nations to promote peace, security, and human dignity after World War II. Dr. Koo’s signature, done with a traditional Chinese brush, is featured in the top left corner of the document. The Charter came into effect on October 24, 1945, following ratification by the five permanent Security Council members, including the Republic of China. The year 2020 marked the 75th anniversary of this significant event in international diplomacy.
