Walter Brown (Hong Kong)

Walter Brown (1886–1957) was a Scottish mathematician and engineer who served as the first Chair Professor of Pure and Applied Mathematics at the University of Hong Kong from 1918 to 1946. As a prominent member of the Hong Kong Rotary Club in the 1930s and 1940s, he helped found and became the first Dean of the Faculty of Science in 1939. Educated at the University of Glasgow, Brown was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and Associate Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers. During World War II, he was a prisoner of war at Stanley Camp in Hong Kong, where he organized study groups and supported fellow internees. After the war, he briefly taught in Scotland before dying in Rhodesia in 1957. The University of Hong Kong honors him with the Walter Brown Memorial Prizes in Mathematics, awarded to outstanding students.
