In March 2003, the Provisional Rotary Club of Beijing, established in 2001, organized China’s first major AIDS charity gala to raise awareness and funds for the disease. The black-tie event featured a formal dinner and performances by prominent Chinese entertainers. The club partnered with organizations such as amfAR, the Chinese Foundation for the Prevention of STD and AIDS, and UNAIDS. Serge Dumont, the club president in 2002-03 and event chairman, highlighted the business community’s role in supporting AIDS education. Over 500 attendees, including business leaders, celebrities, and government officials, participated. Ticket prices ranged from US$75 to $600, with an auction held to further support the cause.
