A Day of Outing for 30 Blind Girls at the Holiday Camp – Hong Kong Rotary Club

In 1951, the Hong Kong Rotary Club founded a holiday camp at Silvermine Bay on Lantau Island to assist impoverished children, especially refugees. Funded by HK$200,000 raised by the Club and annual government subsidies, the camp provided a week-long seaside retreat with meals, recreational activities, and educational programs. Many children, previously living in squatter huts or resettlement estates, enjoyed their first holiday, improving their health and confidence. In 1955, on its third anniversary, the camp hosted an outing for 30 blind girls. The project gained international recognition, leading to a 1957 donation from the Seattle Rotary Club for food relief via CARE. The camp was renovated in 2011 and 2014, and is now operated by the Hong Kong Playground Association as the HKPA Jockey Club Silvermine Bay Camp.
