2,000 Rotary Clubs in China at the Hub of the Orient

Rotary International, founded in 1905, inspired the creation of the first Rotary Club in China, the Shanghai Rotary Club, established in 1919 by 37 Americans. Rotary expanded throughout China’s trade ports and provincial capitals during the Republican era. Dr. Chengting T. Wang became the first Chinese Rotary District Governor in 1935, overseeing 15 clubs across China, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. Despite wartime difficulties, he envisioned growing to 2,000 Rotary clubs in China, a goal he restated in 1946. Dr. Wang was instrumental in developing Rotary in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao until his death in 1961. Another key figure, Dr. Chang-Lok Chen, provided valuable diplomatic and educational perspectives on China during this time.
