Dr. George Wu (Shanghai West) 吳桓興醫學博士(滬西)

Dr. George Wu (1912–1986), a pioneering Chinese oncologist born in Mauritius, founded China’s first specialized cancer hospital, the Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, in 1958. Graduating from Aurora University in Shanghai in 1936, he trained in oncology and radiology in Europe before returning to lead the Sino-Belgian Radium Institute in Shanghai in 1946, a predecessor to Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center. During the Korean War, Wu served as a military doctor and later established China’s first radiobiology department. As superintendent and president of the Cancer Institute, he advanced radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and radiobiology, introducing innovative treatments and domestic technology like the cobalt-60 therapy machine. Wu co-founded the China Anti-Cancer Association and the Cancer Foundation of China, serving as their first chairman. Despite Cultural Revolution challenges, he remained a leading cancer researcher and educator until his death in 1986. The Beijing Huanxing Cancer Hospital was founded in his honor in 1988.

O Dr. George Wu (1912–1986), oncologista chinês pioneiro nascido em Maurício, fundou em 1958 o primeiro hospital especializado em câncer da China, o Hospital do Câncer da Academia Chinesa de Ciências Médicas. Formado pela Universidade Aurora em Xangai em 1936, treinou em oncologia e radiologia na Europa antes de retornar para liderar o Instituto Sino-Belga de Rádio em Xangai em 1946, precursor do Centro de Câncer da Universidade Fudan. Durante a Guerra da Coreia, Wu atuou como médico militar e posteriormente fundou o primeiro departamento de radiobiologia da China. Como superintendente e presidente do Instituto do Câncer, avançou na radioterapia, quimioterapia e radiobiologia, introduzindo tratamentos inovadores e tecnologia nacional como a máquina terapêutica de cobalto-60. Wu cofundou a Associação Anti-Câncer da China e a Fundação do Câncer da China, sendo seu primeiro presidente. Apesar dos desafios da Revolução Cultural, permaneceu líder em pesquisa e ensino oncológico até sua morte em 1986. Em 1988, o Hospital do Câncer Beijing Huanxing foi criado em sua homenagem.

吴桓兴医生（1912–1986）是一位出生于毛里求斯的中国肿瘤学先驱，1958年创办了中国首家专门癌症医院——中国医学科学院肿瘤医院。1936年毕业于上海震旦大学，曾在欧洲接受肿瘤学和放射学进修，1946年回国后领导上海中比镭研究所，后发展为复旦大学附属肿瘤中心。抗美援朝期间任军医，随后建立中国首个放射生物学科。担任肿瘤研究所所长及院长期间，推动放疗、化疗和放射生物学的发展，率先引入包括国产钴60治疗机在内的创新技术。吴医生参与创立中国抗癌协会和中国癌症基金会，并任首任主席。尽管文革期间遭遇迫害，他仍是中国肿瘤研究与教育的领军人物，直到1986年去世。北京环兴癌症医院于1988年以他名字命名成立。
