Dr. William Innes Gerrard (Hong Kong)

Emeritus Professor Dr. William Innes Gerrard (1884–1956) was a Scottish physician and academic who significantly influenced medicine and public health in Hong Kong. Educated at Aberdeen University, he served in the Royal Naval Medical Service during World War I, notably participating in the 1915 ice-breaking voyage of HMS Jupiter to Archangel, Russia, earning the Russian Order of St. Anne. From 1929 to 1939, he was Professor of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong and contributed to clinical advancements at Queen Mary Hospital. Gerrard was active in Hong Kong’s medical community, including work on opium addiction treatment and serving as an Unofficial Justice of the Peace from 1938. Recalled for World War II naval service, he rose to Acting Captain before retiring in Scotland. His honors include OBE, CBE, and decorations from both British and Republic of China authorities.
