The Story of Lanchow Rotary Club (蘭州扶輪社)

The Lanchow Rotary Club (蘭州扶輪社), active from 1943 to 1950, was a small but influential organization with fewer than 30 members, dedicated to humanitarian, medical, and health services during a tumultuous period in northwestern China. Although organized provisionally in 1936 due to ongoing war, it achieved formal Rotary International recognition only in 1943 after seven years as a provisional club—the longest provisional status on record. Based in Lanchow (modern Lanzhou), Gansu Province, a strategic Soviet-influenced city on the Silk Road and a key conduit for Soviet aid in the Second Sino-Japanese War, it was the westernmost Rotary Club in Greater China. Key figures included T’sai Meng-Chien, the first municipal mayor (1941–1946) and former Rotarian, and Sun Ju-Nan, the second mayor (1946–1949) and club vice-president. Despite wartime challenges like Japanese bombings and population instability, the club held regular meetings and continued community service until disbanding in 1950.

Baseado em Lanchow (atual Lanzhou), província de Gansu, uma cidade estratégica sob influência soviética na Rota da Seda e canal importante de ajuda soviética na Segunda Guerra Sino-Japonesa, foi o clube Rotary mais ocidental da Grande China.
