The Long Road Back To China

In 2001, Rotary International officially recognized provisional Rotary clubs in Beijing and Shanghai, marking the revival of Rotary in China after nearly 50 years since the 1949 founding of the People’s Republic. Rotary first established a presence in China in 1919 with the Shanghai club founded by Seattle Rotarian Roger Pinneo. The clubs grew rapidly until wartime and political changes forced their dissolution by 1953. The revival started in the 1990s through fellowship groups of expatriate and local businesspeople in Beijing and Shanghai, engaging in humanitarian work such as supporting orphanages and health initiatives. High-level meetings between Rotary leaders and Chinese officials led to renewed recognition and growth opportunities. In April 2002, a Rotary delegation led by President Richard D. King further promoted Rotary’s expansion and partnerships in China and Southeast Asia, focusing on humanitarian service and cultural exchanges. This return marks a new chapter for Rotary in a nation of more than 1.2 billion people.
