The First 75 Years of Rotary in Asia – 扶輪在亞洲的最初七十五年

Rotary International’s presence in Asia began in 1919 with the establishment of the Manila Rotary Club, initiated by businessman Leon Lambert. That same year, the Shanghai Rotary Club was founded in the Shanghai International Settlement, led by its first president Julian Petit. In 1920, R.J. Coombes founded the Rotary Club of Calcutta, India’s first, initially dominated by Anglo-Saxon businessmen but later producing prominent leaders like Nitish Laharry, who became the first Asian Rotary International president in 1962. The Tokyo Rotary Club was created under Umekichi Yoneyama, the first Asian Rotary International director, who helped expand clubs throughout Japan, Korea, Manchuria, and Taiwan. From 1928, Canadian explorer James Wheeler Davidson played a key role in organizing 19 clubs and promoting Rotary’s mission across Asia. Rotary’s service efforts, including aid after the 1923 Kanto Earthquake, strengthened its reputation and influence in the region during its first 75 years.

A presença do Rotary International na Ásia começou em 1919 com a criação do Rotary Club de Manila, liderado pelo empresário Leon Lambert. Nesse mesmo ano, foi fundado o Rotary Club de Xangai, no Shanghai International Settlement, com Julian Petit como primeiro presidente. Em 1920, R.J. Coombes fundou o Rotary Club de Calcutá, primeiro da Índia, inicialmente dominado por empresários anglo-saxões, mas que depois revelou líderes importantes como Nitish Laharry, o primeiro presidente asiático do Rotary International em 1962. O Rotary Club de Tóquio foi criado sob liderança de Umekichi Yoneyama, o primeiro diretor asiático do Rotary, que expandiu os clubes no Japão, Coreia, Manchúria e Taiwan.
