Rotary in China commenced with The Birth of the Shanghai Rotary Club in 1919

The Rotary Club of Shanghai, founded in 1919, was the first Rotary Club in China and the second in Asia, officially chartered on October 1 of that year with number 545. Although the Hong Kong Rotary Club was initially formed in 1918 through efforts led by Mr. Coombes of Calcutta, it did not fully develop until the 1930s. The Shanghai club was established by Roger D. Pinneo, who previously organized the Manila Rotary Club, choosing Shanghai as a strategic commercial center in the region. Located in the International Settlement, the club mainly comprised American and British members. It aimed to promote Rotary’s principles of service, ethical behavior, and international understanding, which aligned with traditional Confucian values.

O Rotary Club de Xangai, fundado em 1919, foi o primeiro Rotary Club na China e o segundo na Ásia, oficialmente constituído em 1º de outubro daquele ano com o número de carta 545. Embora o Rotary Club de Hong Kong tenha sido inicialmente formado em 1918 pelos esforços liderados pelo Sr. Coombes de Calcutá, só se desenvolveu plenamente na década de 1930. O clube de Xangai foi criado por Roger D. Pinneo, que anteriormente organizou o Rotary Club de Manila, escolhendo Xangai como um centro comercial estratégico na região. Localizado no Bairro Internacional, o clube era composto principalmente por membros americanos e britânicos. Seu objetivo era promover os princípios do Rotary de serviço, conduta ética e compreensão internacional, valores que se alinham às tradições confucionistas.
